Port na Callian Light (IMG0958)

Port na Callian Light

Spectacular, dynamic coastal landscape of Atlantic waves, rugged cliffs, secluded bays, and magnificent views await the visitor at The Giant's Causeway .

Walking the causeway cliff path is something everyone should experience in their lifetime. Up until 1994 you could also walk a lower cliff path which went past the "Giant's Organ", past the "Amphitheater" and "Lacada Point" and wound round the cliffs and bays before ending at Hamilton's Seat a good 2km away. It's from here that you really do get some appreciation of the geology of the area. You can clearly see the various layers towering above you which contain basalt columns, just like that at the main causeway, and also the largely red coloured ‘Interbasaltic Beds’ separating the lower, middle and upper basalt columns. These red layers are soft in comparison to the basalt columns and along with undercutting to create the lower cliff path and general weathering and erosion it has led to some minor and also some major slippages of the cliffs above. This has led to the closure of the lower cliff path from the "Amphitheatre" onward since 1994.

Here you can see a view of "Port na Callian" looking on towards "Hamilton's Seat" in the distance. I have seen this unusual ridge of rock many times from above without appreciating the rocky tors along the ridge which make it look like a dinosaur. You can also see a sea stack to the left which was formerly a sea arch, known as "The Giant's Eye Glass", which you can see on old postcards of the area, this arch collapsed in 1948
